Friday Favorites: Downing Emergen-C like it’s Going Outta Style

Welcome to Friday Favorites, my weekly post where I share what I’ve been loving lately!

CM has been sick with the crud this week. She’s had a fever on and off and has wanted to be in my arms pretty much nonstop. Weeks like this are tough because there’s only so much you can do as a parent. My number one priority is keeping her happy, so sometimes it feels like the house is falling in around me: laundry piling up, dishes overflowing, and dinners definitely not planned out (despite my 2018 goal to do so). I try to give myself grace and remind myself that none of that stuff really matters. The important thing is holding your loved ones close when they need you.

Anyway, here are some things I’ve been loving lately:

My mom used to make popovers for us for breakfast often growing up.  Nothing quite compares to the eggy, buttery, somewhat sweet flavor of a hot popover.  Upon reminiscing on my favorite childhood baked good, I simply had to recreate the experience.

I have baked up three batches in the last month using this recipe, and they have been delicious! Disregard the line about not checking them until 30 minutes have elapsed.  My oven runs hot, so mine were done in about 25 minutes.

Leftovers can be saved in a ziplock in the fridge.  Reheat leftovers in the toaster oven for 2 minutes for a perfect snack!

American Made

Chatham and I watched American Made the other night and loved it!  This movie came out back in the Fall.  It is a (mostly) true story about Barry Seal, a pilot recruited by the CIA to take photos of communist rebels in Central America in the late 1970s.

Barry Seal’s CIA contact (who we recognized as Bill Weasley!) pays him under the table.  The movie implies Seal isn’t receiving enough in salary or benefits to support his growing family.  As a result, he finds freelance work for the Medellin cartel that suits his skill set (I think you can see where I’m going with this?).  This colorful film kept us captivated from start to finish.

Collagen Peptides

As I quickly near the end of my 20s (I turn 28 tomorrow!!!), I am more and more aware of the effects of age.  My skin has started showing signs of damage from all of the sun I exposed it to when I was young and reckless.   To counteract some of the effects of age and sun, I’ve started taking a collagen peptide supplement daily.  You can read about the science behind collagen peptide supplements here.

I heard about this particular brand – Vital Proteins –  from two local bloggers who both mentioned it on their Instagram stories (Destin Duchess and Brushes & Brunch), so when Whole Foods had a sale on supplements a few weeks back, I took the plunge.  I mix one scoop with my coffee each morning.  I haven’t noticed any major effects yet, but since it doesn’t taste like anything, it boosts my protein intake, and the science supports it, I’ll continue taking it until I see a reason not to.

My sister Mellie, who is a chemistry major at Sewanee, told me that collagen works best in the body with the presence of Vitamin C, so I always take my multivitamin and apply my Vitamin C face serum shortly after having my coffee each morning.  Just thought I’d share in case you want to get the best possible value out of your collagen supplement!

Friday Favorites: I Am Very Busy (and also very cozy)

Welcome to Friday Favorites, my weekly post where I share what I’ve been loving lately!

This week we went to storytime at the Destin Library with Carla May’s cousins and had a great time.  Our local library has so many great programs for kids, and it was fun seeing all the children getting into the songs and stories.  Carla May quickly found a new friend with snacks (of course) and followed him around like a little puppy!

Here are a few more things I’ve been loving this week:

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

friday favorites star warsOh you had to know from my Instagram and my post a few weeks ago that the new Star Wars movie was going to make my Friday Favorites list!  Y’all, it was SO good! I am really enjoying the new movies in this series and this one did not disappoint. The acting was fabulous and I was impressed with how the producers handled Carrie Fisher’s role as Leia.

If you’ve already seen the film, check out this fabulous analysis of Ben Solo, the millennial villain we need right now.

Wonder Weeks App

friday favorites wonder weeksAs Carla May has grown from baby to toddler over the last 14 months, she has gone through periods of fussiness, periods of pure joy, and everything in between.  The Wonder Weeks app has been so helpful for me to predict what general mood she will be in on a given week.  The app does a wonderful job of explaining why she behaves the way she does, which has helped me be more patient with her during tantrums and fussiness.

For those who haven’t heard of this app, you simply enter your child’s due date, and the app will calculate the dates when your child might go through “developmental leaps.”  You can turn on notifications to warn you when a “stormy period” is about to occur.  There is so much information available through this app on how your child’s brain is developing during each leap, so any data junkies out there like myself will love studying up on why your child behaves they way they do.

Fuzzy White Sweater

I ordered this fuzzy white sweater from Gap a couple weeks before Christmas, and I have worn it SO many times  since then.  It is so soft and comfy and pairs well with almost everything in my closet.  The length is perfect to keep your whole body warm and to cover up your rear if you want to wear some questionable leggings (are they thick enough to be considered pants? doesn’t matter if you throw on this sweater!).

This cardigan is cute enough to wear out and comfy enough to lounge around the house in, too.  This sweater is one of my favorite purchases this winter.  It also comes in black!

Band.o Planner

I have been a loyal bullet journaler for over two years now, a very long streak for a planner junkie like myself.  I had seen band.o brand planners on Instagram and thought they were absolutely adorable, so when I found this one (in my favorite color!) heavily discounted at Homegoods, I took the leap.

This particular planner is actually 17-months starting in August, but I just cut out the pages for August through December to make it a year-long planner.  There are several pages of super cute stickers at the beginning of the planner, beautiful illustrations throughout, and so many note pages!  There is a calendar for each month and two-page weekly layouts with plenty of room for scheduling and to-do lists.  So far I am finding I can use the bullet journal concepts within the structure of this planner and it is working really well for me.

Friday Favorites: Fashionista in Training (Just Kidding!)

Welcome to Friday Favorites, my weekly post where I share what I’ve been loving lately!

This week, my daughter has been obsessed with shoes!  Carla May will hardly ever keep her own shoes on, but she loves to crawl around with her hands in mine, especially this gorgeous pair of red mules that I picked up at a local Fashion Flash Sale recently.

Another thing Carla May has been doing that has had me cracking up this week – she loves purses and bags and has made the connection that when mommy grabs her purse, it’s time to leave the house.  SO whenever she happens upon a bag she puts her arm through the handle and drags it behind her while she scoots off yelling “byyyyeeee!”  I really love this age!

Here are a few more things that have brought me joy this week:

I am so proud of my home state right now!!!  I had mentioned my support for Doug Jones here on the blog before, but only a small part of me thought that the people of Alabama would elect him since “democrat” seems to be a dirty word in much of the state.  In this case, to be proven wrong is such a thrill!

Watching the election coverage on Tuesday night was so inspiring for me.  I am very excited to see what Senator Doug Jones will accomplish.

Sidenote:  I love the fact that the majority of the 22,000+ write-in votes were for University of Alabama Football Coach Nick Saban!  Roll TIde!

Library Extension for Chrome

friday favorites library extensionFor my library enthusiasts, this may be a life-changing tool for you.  It certainly has been for me!  The library extension for Chrome is available for FREE download here.

When you are browsing or or any other online bookseller, the library extension shows you whether that title is available at your local library.  The extension window allows you to place a hold on that book with just one click.

I can’t tell you how much money this has saved me by encouraging me to check books out from our fabulous public library rather than purchase them!

The questions I get asked most often (surprisingly) from blog readers or Instagram friends are usually about what I am wearing.  You may have noticed from my blog and Instagram posts on Wednesday that I am using a new tool called, which allows me to more easily share with you products I like or similar clothing items to the looks I am wearing in my photographs.  I’m sharing this with you on Friday Favorites because is a somewhat exclusive program, so I am excited to have been accepted!  I even have my very own profile on their website and app (screenshot below)!

friday favorites liketoknow.itWhat this means:  If you click on any of my links from my blog or Instagram and make a purchase, I receive a small commission (at no extra cost to you), which helps me cover the expenses of running Hello Marilu, so thank you in advance for your support!  I’ll always try to link products or items of clothing that appear in my blog posts or photographs.  Also, I’ll likely create more fashion or style-centered posts in the future, but don’t worry!  I’m not going to go all fashionista on you.  I’ll stick with my usual mixture of classic neutrals and quirky, fun pieces!

Friday Favorites: I must have been hungry this week….

Welcome to Friday Favorites, my weekly post where I share what I’ve been loving this week!

After compiling my list, I realized that I have FOOD on the brain this week.. What can I say? –  The holidays tend to rev up my appetite!  Here are my Friday Favorites – things that have brought me joy this week:

Lionfish Tacos

friday favorites lionfish tacosIf you follow my Instagram stories, you saw my Public Service Announcement about Lionfish earlier this week.  If not, then let me enlighten you! Lionfish are an invasive species in Florida that reduce biodiversity and threaten native species.  Read more here.

You won’t see lionfish on restaurant menus often, because the work that goes into cleaning the fish is very intensive.  Lionfish have poisonous stingers that must be avoided in preparation.  But, if you see lionfish on a menu, order it!  Not only is the tender, white fish delicious, you are actually helping the environment by encouraging the fishing of the species.

This week, La Paz and Dewey Destin restaurants here in Destin had lionfish on the specials menu.  I had lionfish tacos for the first time and they were wonderful!

Momofuku Milk Bar Chocolate Chip Peppermint Corn Flake Cookies

friday favorites momofuku cookiesI am a huge fan of Momofuku Milk Bar truffles, so when I saw a recipe in a magazine for these cookies a few weeks ago, I had to save it.  I was invited to a friend’s holiday cookie swap last weekend, and I knew this would be the perfect recipe to try out, and I am so glad I did!

These cookies are packed with all of my favorite holiday flavors – chocolate, marshmallow, and peppermint – and they have a delightful texture that manages to be both crunchy and gooey at the same time.

Try the recipe for yourself here!

Slow-cooker Hash Brown Soup

friday favorites Loaded Crockpot Hash Brown Potato Soup - FamilyFreshMeals.comTo simplify my week, every Monday morning, I throw dinner together in the crockpot.  After I posted an Instagram story on Monday showing off my crockpot full of hash browns and veggies, I got several requests for the recipe, so I thought I’d share it here on the blog.

This  simple and tasty loaded baked potato-style soup recipe uses frozen hash browns instead of cut-up potatoes.  I added extra carrots and threw in some celery since I had it in the fridge.  I also used Muenster cheese instead of Mexican because that’s what I had, and it was delicious!  The recipe made enough for me for dinner on Monday, plus four extra servings for later in the week.

Star Projector Tree Topper

friday favorites tree topperAnother thing I posted on Instagram stories that I got lots of questions about was my new tree topper, which not only lights up the top of my tree, but projects spinning stars onto the ceiling above it as well!  My husband thinks it is a little tacky, but I think it is fun and festive!  The clamp made this easier to attach to my tree than any other topper I have had.  It comes in both silver and gold.

Friday Favorites: You Should Go See Lady Bird ASAP

Welcome to Friday Favorites, in which I share what I’ve been loving this week!

This week, I put up my Christmas tree and decorations and determined that I am too old to enjoy the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.  If you watched my Insta-stories this week, you already know it took me almost all day and a therapeutic trip to Target to get my tree up and decorated, thanks to my not-so-helpful assistant.  But it is up!  Next up, the outdoor Christmas lights…. and possibly some more Christmas crafts because there is something wrong with me.

This is my daughter’s face after I tell her, once again, not to climb the Christmas tree.  We went with a smaller one this year just in case it ends up toppling down.  Any tips for keeping toddlers from tearing down the tree and breaking the ornaments?  Leave me a comment!

Here are my Friday Favorites – things that have brought me joy this week:

Baby Animal Watercolors

friday favorites libbo morgan baby animalsMy sister-in-law Libbo is an incredibly talented artist (I’ve written about her work here before), and she has a new series of watercolor baby animals that I absolutely adore!  They are so whimsical and beautiful and you can check out more examples on her Instagram here.

Lady Bird

friday favorites lady bird

Chatham and I went to see Lady Bird this week, a movie making headlines for smashing Rotten Tomatoes records as the “best reviewed movie of all time” (well-deserved, IMO).  Lady Bird was highly recommended by my sister-in-law Jane, who even came over to watch our kid so that we could go see it.  Written and directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Saoirse Ronan, the film is a coming-of-age story about a high school girl who feels misunderstood in Sacramento, California, where she grew up and dreams of a future on the East Coast.  More than anything, the film is about her relationship with her equally-strong-willed mother.

Packed with emotion, humor, and nostalgia for the early 2000’s, I would recommend this movie to anyone who was once a teenager (i.e. EVERYONE).  I’ll be shocked if this isn’t an Oscar darling.

This Dress

friday favorites Cloth & Stone Flutter-Sleeve Tunic DressI went Black Friday shopping last week at Anthropologie and fell in LOVE with this dress.  The fabric is a high-quality chambray, and it is so, so soft.  I am obsessed with the bell sleeves and the open back with a tie (click on the photo for another view).  I did not buy it, because the lines for the dressing room and registers were too long and my daughter was getting cranky (that’s what I get for going to a store on Black Friday, right?), but I will probably order it before too long.  This is a perfect dress that I could wear now since it is still hot here in Florida.  It would also be a great dress to wear all spring.  I can think of so many ways to dress this one up or down.

Pantsuit Politics Podcast

friday favorites pantsuit politics

I have been listening to SO many podcasts lately and one of my favorite political/news podcasts is Pantsuit Politics.  The two hosts, Sarah and Beth, represent views from the left and the right respectively.  Twice a week, the women open-mindedly discuss current events and important issues in an entertaining and informative fashion.  I tend to steer clear of mainstream news channels and talking heads because all the partisanship and fear-mongering makes me anxious.  Pantsuit Politics is a refreshing alternative.

Friday Favorites: I can put up my Christmas tree next week!

Welcome to Friday Favorites, in which I share what I’ve been loving this week!

Happy Friday, y’all! This week, I realized that it is socially acceptable to put up my Christmas tree NEXT WEEK!!!

We took our Christmas photos yesterday, and I am already thinking about decorating…  I’m going to try to copy Southern Living‘s gorgeous rosemary swag pictured below, and if it doesn’t end up a Pinterest Fail, I’ll share the results with you!

friday favorites Rosemary Christmas swag

This will be our first Christmas with a crawling/maybe walking toddler, and I would love some advice: How do you keep your little one from breaking ornaments/tearing up gifts/climbing the tree???  I am at a total loss!

Anyway, here are my Friday Favorites – things that have brought me joy this week:

Wonder Woman

friday favorites wonder womanWe finally got around to watching Wonder Woman this week, and it was so good!  Gal Gadot gives a stunning performance, and the fact that she was pregnant and experiencing morning sickness throughout the shooting blows me away!  This is a movie that women and men will both enjoy, especially if you like a good superhero flick.

Doug Jones for Alabama Senate

friday favorites doug jones alabama us senateAlabama friends, if you have paid attention to the news at all in the last couple weeks, you already know that the Republican candidate Roy Moore is a total creep, at best, and a pedophile, at worst.  Anyone being okay with a man in his thirties sexually assaulting teenage girls is beyond me.  Luckily, the election has not yet taken place!  Moore’s opponent Doug Jones is a good Alabamian with lots of experience who would make a great senator.

If you haven’t yet registered to vote, you can do so online right here, but do it soon, because the election is December 12!  To my Republican friends who can’t bear to vote for a Democrat… get over it! (or just stay home.. that’s fine, too!)

Ok, off my soapbox…

The Popcast

friday favorites the popcast with knox and jamie podcastI have recently become infatuated with the bubbly and sassy personalities of Knox McCoy and Jamie Golden of the indulgently entertaining pop and culture podcast, The Popcast.  I follow very little pop and culture news, so this weekly hour of fun celebrity banter between the two Birmingham, Alabama-based hosts is a real treat.  Knox and Jamie are obviously very intelligent.  Their pop culture analysis manages to be both silly and insightful, and the duo shares fabulous book recommendations.  Give them a listen!

Gold Eyeshadow

friday favorites urban decay baked gold eyeshadowAnother recent obsession, spurred by the Insta-Stories of another Gulf Coast blogger Lipstick, Heels, and a Baby, is GOLD eyeshadow.  My favorite eyeshadow brand is Urban Decay and the color Baked is the perfect gold for any skintone.  I’ve worn it everyday this week!

How was your week?  What are your Friday Favorites?  What brought you joy?

Friday Favorites: Christmas, Lipcolor, and Slip-On Sneakers

My poor baby has had a fever on and off all week, has been a little irritable, and has been sleeping very restlessly at night (so I’ve been sleeping restlessly at night, too).   It breaks my heart when she is feeling bad!  Any tips for getting through tough weeks with sick little ones (other than Tylenol for her and coffee for me)?

Anyway, here are some things that have brought me joy this week:

Bring on Christmas!

I am not a staunch believer that celebrating Christmas must wait until after Thanksgiving.  If my husband would let me, I would put up our tree and decorations the day after Halloween.  With all the time and effort we spend decorating, we might as well enjoy the decorations as long as possible, right?!  BUT since I have to wait until he is willing to help me purchase and haul home a Christmas tree (Team Real Tree here), I will have to settle for enjoying my favorite holiday candle and some Christmas tunes for now.

Every year, I look forward to purchasing a Nature’s Wick Holiday Wreath scented candle and burning it literally every moment I’m in the living room throughout the holiday season.  Some may call that lame, but I call it FESTIVE.

When I was little, my mother had a collection of holiday albums on vinyl that she would pull out around the holidays.  I can remember dancing around the living room in my gymnastics leotard to “Do They Know it’s Christmas” like I was a Spice Girl.  Listening to Christmas music, especially modern covers of classic holiday tunes, brings back those feelings of excitement and joy I experienced as a child.

The BEST Long-wearing Matte Lipcolor

I have been on the hunt for the perfect long-wearing matte lipcolor for all of my adult life, and I was pleased to finally end my hunt this week when I purchased Maybelline Matte Lip Ink in Lover.

The selfie posted to the left is at the end of my workday with zero touch-ups since I put on my makeup that morning.  I don’t even bring the lipcolor tube with me to work – I leave it in my makeup case at home because this stuff stays on so well.   I love it so much I went back and bought it in Pioneer, because I love a bold red lip.

Slip-On Sneakers

Slip-ons are one of my favorite footwear options for Fall.  They can be dressed up or down, go with everything, and are comfortable and practical to boot.  I had a pair of black Toms slip-ons (similar to these) that I wore nearly everyday of my pregnancy and loved.  I just purchased this neutral straw pair and have worn them literally everyday since they arrived.  My favorites that are available to order online right now are pictured below.

How was your week?  What brought you joy?

Friday Favorites: Halloween, Dirty John, and Cold-Weather Looks

Happy Halloween Week!  We had so much fun with our little pumpkin at the Destin Fall Festival earlier this week and with her cousins on Halloween night.

As Chatham and I were watching Stranger Things (the perfect combination of creepy and campy) after CM’s bedtime on Halloween, I reflected back to a year ago when we were watching the first season of Stranger Things the very same night, but with a fresh, new, tiny human sleeping in the Rock N Play next to us.  That seems like so long ago and just yesterday at the same time.

We didn’t have a single trick or treater this year (thank you, cul de sac living), but I did spend twenty minutes trying to find a multipack of candy that tastes good but doesn’t contain peanuts!  Fellow mamas of children with allergies, my heart goes out to you!

Here are a few more things that brought me joy this week:

Dirty John Podcast

Image result for dirty john

CM and I went to Mentone, Alabama, last weekend for a childhood friend’s wedding and to see my family.  On the seven hour drive home, I binge-listened to Dirty John, a true crime podcast in the same vein as S-Town and Serial.  Dirty John, about an online dating romance gone seriously wrong, is made up of six episodes around forty minutes each, and I listened to the entire series straight through.

I try to listen to these types of podcast series knowing as little as possible going in, so I recommend you just take my word for it and start listening rather than try to find out more beforehand.

Fall/Winter Clothes!

Mentone was in the 30s and 40s when we were in town, which was so exciting for me after experiencing a way-hotter-than-usual October here in Destin.  After digging through last year’s winter clothes, I put together this look for my friend’s wedding.

I LOVE this classic navy sweater dress that I got from J. McLaughlin a few years ago.  It is so comfortable and feels like I piece I’ll keep going back to for years to come.  They have it stocked for this season, but in a gorgeous gray (linked below).

I bought these Jessica Simpson over-the-knee boots three years ago and have gotten so much wear out of them!  I love the look of over-the-knee boots with a sweater dress that hits right at the knee… You can keep warm in the cold without having to wear tights!  I found some knockoffs that look exactly the same for half the price linked below.

Carla May’s sweet gold star sweater dress with a tutu was a gift from one of her godmommies, and it was a perfect look with thick tights for the cold evening.  She had some adorable sweater-material Ugg boots on (linked below), but she kicked them off before we could snap a photo.  She has so many precious pairs of shoes, but she hates wearing them these days!

Lil Cactus Smocked Baby Outfits

Last year, I was finishing my MBA, had a baby with colic, and developed a case of shingles on my face at Christmastime, so I didn’t get to experience the magic that is holiday-themed smocked baby outfits (insert all the heart eyes here).

Yesterday, I stumbled upon a great sale on Zulily of Lil Cactus smocked baby outfits.  Lil Cactus is a brand I had never heard of before, but they offer cute inexpensive outfits, and the brand seems to have decent reviews online.  I ordered the white corduroy dress for CM, and I am hoping it arrives soon so that we can take photos for our Christmas card!  Here are a few of my favorites from their Holiday collection:

How was your week? What brought you joy?

Friday Favorites: Anthropologie Fall/Winter Collection

In this special edition of Friday Favorites, I’d like to share with you my favorite pieces from Anthropologie’s Fall/Winter Collection.

Considering I grew up in rural Alabama and only learned not to wear multiple animal prints in the same outfit about ten years ago, I do not consider myself any kind of authority on fashion.  But as I’ve gotten older and my style has evolved, I have become much more comfortable knowing what looks ok and what I like.

Basically, I stick to a mostly neutral color palette and basic pieces, but then sometimes add items with a quirky factor.  I love playing around with proportions, patterns, textures, and details.  If you are into a little fun and quirkiness in the way you dress, Anthropologie is the place to shop.

This year, I am loving chunky knits, unexpected florals, subtle velvets, interesting ruffles, and millenial pinks.  Here are my favorite items from Anthropologie’s Fall/Winter collection (scroll to the right to see more):
